About Derric Brown LCSW

Who is Derric Brown?

Well that is a loaded question, but since you asked. I will attempt to introduce myself in the most concise manner possible. I am a believer in God, I am a husband who has been married for 10 years ( but in a relationship for 18 years), I am a veteran of the United States Army that  served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I earned my Bachelors in Human Services from California State University Dominguez Hills and my Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. However I am most proud of the fact that I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 15 years of working in the Human Services field.

Why did Derric choose to become an LCSW?

Again another loaded question, but I did not choose to become an LCSW;  My life experiences have shaped me into an empathetic, passionate and resilient LCSW. I have  varying experience with a diverse client population to include: Veterans, youth in foster care or on probation, and adults with developmental disabilities. Over the last three years Derric has worked in a group private practice and has developed a strong therapeutic alliance with teenagers, adults and couples. Derric’s specialty is working with children and teenagers who suffer from a history of psychological, physical or sexual abuse. In addition, Derric specializes in providing couples counseling to couples struggling to keep their relationship intact, and overcome barriers to effective communication.

How does Derric help people in therapy?

Derric believes that therapy is a process, and in order for the process to be effective the individual, couple, or group has to “trust the process”. Derric does not have a magic pill to solve people’s problems, and he does not fix people. However Derric utilizes a trauma informed approach to treatment that respects a person’s right to self determination, but challenges individuals, couples and groups to be introspective and develop insight into their current problems. Derric empowers his clients by allowing them to use their paintbrush (their voice), and allowing them to paint on the canvas (his ears). Derric believes in empowering his clients to view their problems with the correct lens, so the healing process can begin.
